Narrative Theory Essay

Narrative theory is the way a story is told in fictional and non-fictional media texts. I will be using the trailer Bedeviled by Terror House because this trailer was the best one that I saw in my opinion, it had very good editing and the location was very effective. In my summer trailer the Todorov theory was not put into place, the beginning showed a female running frantically. There was a disruption, when the camera was dropped on the floor. Of course there was no resolution as that would have been the whole film within the trailer. The trailer appears to be in non-linear order, however it does not have any flashbacks or flash fowards. There is a vast amount of language within the media to help describe media texts for example, technical code or signifier. It allows us to discuss the way we use camera, sound, editing, mise-en-scene, semiotics and ideology to create meaning in the media. Symbollic codes include; weapons, mirrors, light and doors as well as many more. These are all very important as they set the tone and as Neale states, genre are forms of repetition and difference (which keeps audiences interested) for the film which enables the audience to feel a specific type of way that is given through the film. The context of the symbollic code is also very important for the film because it establishes exactly what the weapon or mirror signifies. If you do not understand that a woman being stabbed with a knife by a man for example, represents rape then the film will not have a big effect on the audience. Religious Symbols- Religious artifacts used in horror films include; Christian, occult, satanic, voodoo or anything that is greater than humanity. Religion is frequently used in horror films with life and death, spirituality, man playing God and man fighting both inner and outer demons for example, demons and possession. Symbols of death- Symbols of dearth such as; skeletons, coffins, gravestones and angels of death are often portrayed in horror films. Of course death is a realistic factor in both life and films, therefore it'll instill more fear into the audience.
