Digital Technology Essay

Digital Technology for example; photoshop or weebly, is any form of software that allows us to be extravagantly more creative in the editing and producing of our media production (horror teaser trailer). Therefore, helping us reach a more professional level of work. As well as this, the merging of different media raises the expectations of our work for example, using final cut to edit the trailer and after effects to create titles in a more unique fashion, then transferring them same titles from after effects onto final cut to appear in the our trailer. By using this method of convergence, we are able to experiment in a much more creative way rather than keeping our work to a low level of professionalism.

Our preliminary task in AS was to produce a college magazine which was not very successful this was because of the lack of understanding we had for the creation of this product. The use of digital technology was not as relevant in this task for example, I did not put any research into this so I did not use the internet or any form of social media to understand the purpose/conventions of a college magazine. Therefore, I had no influences to enhance my ideas on how to create this type of magazine and allow a target audience to recognize it as a college magazine. Furthermore, there was no drafting or thought put into the production of the magazine, I used the canon camera from college to take the pictures of my model for the front camera although, we did not have much of an idea on the different, most effective types of camera angles to make the magazine appear more desirable. The editing of the front cover was also not an overly arduous task, I applied the image to fit the whole page and added a masthead with extra text. This shows how a lack of knowledge in the production of something creative can really affect the outcome of it, it shows that we are limited to a poorly executed task if we do not understand fully the purpose as well as conventions of a magazine.

My skills from the preliminary task to my AS music magazine task had increasingly improved due to my much more broad understanding of conventions and why we have them. However still relatively basic, by this time I had understood that research is incredibly important, I had looked and analysed many music magazines such as; NME and Kerrang! to try and imitate and combine different conventions of typical rock front covers. This made it much easier to recognize my magazine as the genre rock. To create my product I used Indesign which enabled me to add the structural conventions of mastheads and captions which are always pictured on all magazines. There was not too much experimentation in this task but much more research put into it. Furthermore, the time and effort put into taking the photos of the main character on the front cover was much more compared tot he preliminary task as I had a wider understanding of mise-en-scene so I realized that clothing was extremely important. For example, on my magazine front cover my model was wearing a red plaid shirt with a black t-shirt and black jeans, this is a common look for people interested in the rock genre consequently making it much more recognizable to the main target audience. Also, I was more aware of the lighting and camera angles that improve the look of the images shown on the cover.

My transition from AS to A2 showed my continuous development through my horror teaser trailer which is definitely of a much more skilled and proficient level. I had viewed over 20 different horror trailers of a variety of sub-genres for example, slasher and supernatural which helped me significantly in the deciding of my sub-genre which is slasher. I am much more confident in using the software to create this production, I also have mixed the different medias such as After effects and Final Cut. There was far more research and planning in the making of my trailer, such as moodboards, surveys and drafts which really helped us decide what we like and what we do not like. Digital Technology freely allows us to experiment a considerable amount more, this is because we can create something and if we do not like it we can re-do it for example, we could add layers over an image to create a more textured look to increase the horror imagery and if it was decided that it did not look as good as we thought we can delete it and try something completely different. This improved the creativity of my product as it increases the level of experimentation which is what people like to see as it shows that a lot of effort and thought has gone into the final product.

In conclusion, without the equipment or digital technology to push creative products along our creativity is very much restricted. This is the reason why I am expected to try all new things when creating the product to increase the creativity and uniqueness, in comparison to 20 years ago when you were unable to make things in this new, easier way. However, it could be said that creativity has been lost due to the advanced technology we have gained because we are not the ones making the end production, the software and technology is essentially doing it for us.
