Genre theories are based on particular conventions of content for example, themes of a film or the structure. These belong to certain texts known to belong to them.
The genre theorist, Chandler says that by having different genres it enables audiences to have choice in what they prefer to watch. We are able to recognise a specific of type of text through the films characteristics for example, in the horror genre, fans of the sub-genre slasher, would be able to recognise certain conventions within a film like a masked killer or a sharp weapon. In my summer trailer there was a lot of blood which is another icon of a slasher. Based on the audience’s preference, they hold high expectations for the film they want to see, therefore if they enjoy supernatural horrors, fans will expect things such as poltergeists or levitation.
Furthermore, separate theorist Metz, created 4 stages of a genre; experimental, classic, parody and deconstruction. An example of a deconstructed zombie film is Warm Bodies, it has incorporated romance and zombie together. However, it takes the whole zombie concept and twists it completely to the point where all the typical conventions of a zombie horror are no longer within this film. My summer trailer would be classed as classic because it holds the same conventions as a typical horror film. It does not experiment with any new icons or themes, and it does not make anything comical.
Another theorist is Altman, who created a set of pleasures for audiences who have set expectations for what a horror genre is. These are; emotional, visceral and intellectual. In my summer trailer there is visceral pleasure included for example, blood on the victims bodies and the location which was in the woods and a graveyard, made the trailer a lot more conventional. By adding these aspects it allows the audience to view the film and see for them selves if they're scared or not and whether they feel pleasure from seeing this. Also, there wasn't emotional pleasure from the dark settings and tense music. This enables viewers to feel something within them selves and decide if their expectations of the film were met.
The theorist Abercrombie, stated that genre is dismantling and boundaries are merging and becoming more permeable. Other genres are entering films and making them 'hybrid'. By doing this it ensures that the audiences and fans will not get bored of seeing the same thing over and over again. For example, the living dead franchise has been played many times without anything new happening to create excitement.
