My production skills from AS to A2 have improved as I have now been exposed to the many different ways of creating something that is for the purpose of the media only. Research and planning is extremely important in the making of my productions, using different software and technology as well as, understanding certain conventions that relate to the accuracy of the final product.
Our AS preliminary work which was to create a college magazine, did not involve a significant amount of research or planning. This therefore meant that I did not actually understand what a college magazines purpose was or what it should have looked like. After completing this work, I realized that there was no audience to target the magazine towards which meant that I could not include conventional, 'stereotypical' factors that might sway an audience to the magazine more. If there were actual research and planning involved such as, a questionnaire based on what people expect from this type of magazine there would have been a deeper, more detailed understanding of what college magazine mans would want to be receiving.
We also had to create a music magazine front cover for a genre of our choice in AS, which enabled me to become more imaginative and creative when picking out conventions and typical aspects of a rock magazine. I was able to pick what images, fonts and colour scheme I wanted to use giving me much more independence when it came to creating this second task. To understand what was needed for this magazine cover in order to make it conventional and professional, I needed to comprehensively look into the conventions of the rock genre for it to look more attractive to its fans. The mise-en-scene of a rock genre magazine is very dark, with the main colours; red and black used in the clothing and font. Also, some of the main images show the models wearing dark makeup such as, eye liner. Leather jackets, checked shirts and black, ripped jeans are commonly used in rock genre magazine front covers.
My summer trailer in A2 was created using our iphones which had cameras on them to film our scenes, we then edited the trailer using apps and laptops. Our trailer did have some good conventions, it was filmed in the dark and in a cemetery.
There was a substantial amount of research included in the making of my horror film trailer in A2. I had to make moodboards, questionnaires, drafts of magazines and posters and we also thoroughly looked into semiotics such as phallic and yonic symbolism. We had many sub-genres to research like slasher, supernatural and zombie which gave us the chance to choose which one we would prefer to use when creating our own trailer. For the magazine covers and the posters, I looked at well-known, popular magazines to essentially take ideas from and use in our own ones to make them conventional pieces of work that were clear to see for the audience.
In conclusion, I have developed successfully in the making of productions. Mostly through a post-modernist viewpoint as I am able to recreate the old and make it my own by blending multiple different aspects from different forms of media.
