4 Conventions

My 4 conventions are; slasher, zombie, monster and supernatural.

Conventions are extremely important in media products as they make it recognizable to that specific genre, they are used a form with a set of rules. For example the conventions of a magazine front cover, makes it identifiable with fans of that specific magazine, this may be the font of the masthead or the layout of the dominant image.

Our trailer was a slasher therefore it conveyed conventions typical of this sub-genre such as, weapons that portray phallic imagery (a knife) or using a mask on the antagonist. By incorporating these conventions into the trailer we were able to create an effective slasher horror trailer. I understood this because of the research that I involved myself in, by looking at a variety of different horror trailers I could conclude the differences and similarities within these trailers. For example, in a supernatural horror film there is typically not much weaponry used and in a slasher horror film there was a lot of blood and gore involved.

Our trailer followed the structure of a real media text as I researched the way in which a teaser trailer was filmed down to the second for example, the 3 act structure (equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution). This enabled us to show our understanding of a horror film teaser trailer by making it appear as similar to a real trailer as possible by following the same structure as one.
