Thesis Statement: should society or the individual or an educated elite decide what is a appropriate level of sex and violence to expose children to?

In some cases, the individual is able to decide what is appropriate to watch in regards of the level of sex and violence children are exposed to as some do have the mental capacity to think logically and not become influenced by what they see.
However, this is only acceptable when the public actually understand what the ratings mean. For example, 27% of consumers are unable to say "accurately" what the 12A rating means. Therefore, they cannot correctly say what they can acceptably watch without becoming to influenced or scared. If more is done to improve the understanding for some people it will be easier for individuals to decide what is appropriate and what is not.
If an educated elite decides what level of sex and violence children are exposed to they may have more knowledge and are more wise to what can protect children and what cannot. However, they are not representative of the rest of society and could only be working in the interests of the films revenue. Children may be being used to turn 'films into lucrative business ventures' rather than films being used for entertainment purposes. Therefore, they are not the best people to make this type of decision.
